Virasana: Hero Pose

Kneel on the floor and place a brick or towel or folded blanket under your seat. Sit back towards your heels and keep your back straight. This simple pose has many benefits:

  • Restores energy in the legs

  • Maintains healthy arches in the feet

  • Keeps the knee joints pain free

  • Good for digestion

If your legs are swollen or tired Hero Pose may relieve this. During pregnancy it can help with this too. This pose can be used as an alternative seating position for breath work or meditation.

Elevate your buttocks higher with another pillow or brick if your knees are stiff. Many people find this hurts their ankles or feet so place rolled up towels under the ankles or shins. It should be pain free and comfortable to sit for a few minutes. Usually we stretch the arms up towards the sky while seated like this to elongate the sides of the waist.

Imagine you are getting taller from within the spine. Lengthen the crown of the head to the ceiling and keep the tailbone tucked in between the sitting bones to make sure that your lower back is in it’s natural curve. Pull your ribcage back a little too. Close your eyes and feel the breath in the body. Enjoy!

Classes cater for all levels of ability and ages. Private classes also available. Please contact Melinda for more details.
